THE BIGGER PICTURE

What is a 4-H steer project?

I spent time researching 4-H online because I wanted to understand what the whole program is about, not just my own project. Here is what I learned, plus what I have noticed myself.

THE PROGRAM

4-H, in a nutshell

4-H is a national youth program run through university extension offices. In Tennessee, that is UT/TSU Extension. It gives kids like me hands on projects in things like agriculture, livestock, cooking, crafts, and leadership, all built around the idea of “learn by doing.”
Livestock projects like mine are some of the biggest 4-H offers. I do not just show up on show day. I am responsible for taking care of an animal, feeding him, training him, and keeping him healthy for months beforehand, and then I show what I have learned at a county show like the Henry County Youth Livestock Show & Sale.
4-H often works alongside FFA, Future Farmers of America, which is a similar in school agriculture program. Both organizations support kids like me who show livestock in Henry County.

MORE THAN A LIVESTOCK SHOW

Skills I am learning

I found out that kids who show livestock are not just doing agriculture, we are basically learning how to run a small business too.

Responsibility & priorities

I have to do his daily care even when it is not convenient.

Time management

Balancing school, chores, and show prep every single day.

Animal husbandry

Learning his nutrition, health, grooming, and handling.

Budgeting & record keeping

Tracking costs and planning ahead for the sale.

Sales & marketing

Presenting Mr. Moo-agi, and myself, to buyers.

Communication & confidence

Talking with judges, buyers, and other exhibitors.

Critical thinking & decisions

Adjusting his care and my plan along the way.

Hard work & consequences

I have learned that effort, or the lack of it, always shows.
